Thats the question I was asking myself this morning. Since I bought my phone Nokia has now made all maps and navigation software free, forever. However, to take advantage of this you have to upgrade the software on your phone from Nokia maps version 2 to Nokia maps version 3.
This is where the problems began. Nokia maps is stored on the internal memory, not on the memory card. It is not possible to uninstall Nokia maps through the file manager or applications manager. So how do you uninstall Nokia maps and how do you install Nokia maps v3?
After a bit of hunting around the internet I found a few solutions, not all complete, so I thought I would document the whole process here.
Before you start, make sure you update your phones software using the Nokia Software Updater. However, most branded phones are never updated as the phone companies are to lazy to keep upto date!
1. Connect your Nokia 5800 to your computer using the usb cable. On prompt, select mass storage and make sure ovi suite is closed.
2. The phone will show up as a 'Removable Disk' open the folder to show the contents of the internal memory card.
3. Delete the folder 'cities' and the file '.qf' . Also to free up a bit more memory you can delete the folder 20001f63 within the 'private' folder which contains data from previous versions of Nokia maps.
4. Disconnect your phone from the computer and then open up the maps application. This will remake the 'cities' folder and relevant files.
5. Reconnect your phone to the computer and select 'Pc Suite'. If it doesn't open automatically then open OVI Suite. From the top menu, select 'view' and go to the maps page. Here you should be prompted to install the new version of maps.
Alternatively, you can download the .sis file below and install the program directly to your phone by double clicking it.

6. After installation, disconnect the phone again and start maps. Select 'options' and click on 'about', you should now show that you have v3.01xxx installed. Go back, select 'tools' then 'settings' and then 'maps'. Under 'Memory to be used' make sure that your memory card is selected and not the internal memory. Go back and exit maps.
7. Reconnect to the computer in 'Pc Suite' mode and go back to the maps application. The application should now connect to the internet and offer you the free maps. Click on the maps and voice navigation files you want and click on download, which will install them to your phone.

A few notes if you have problems with the above steps.
If, when you connect your phone back to the maps program, you get a message saying "your device's maps or voice guidance files may have been corrupted." Then you can repeat steps 1 to 3 and reconnect.
